Whenever I hear the word culture, I take out my checkbook.

Design is helping to erase the boundaries between commercial and cultural experiences. Designer and writer Abbott Miller considers how graphic design and exhibition design are on the front lines of these changes, often tasked with overcoming problems that have been in the making for decades.

We are all multifaceted in our skills and interests, and often we feel such pressure to choose a single focus in order to do it well (not to mention make a living.) But maybe we don’t have to choose—maybe we can create balance and bridges through value and purpose driven work. When there is a gap between the heart’s work and a “job,” the work becomes difficult. Let’s close the gap.

Sara Blake is a New York City based fine artist, freelance designer, and creative director for sustainable investing fintech startup Ethic.
